During the last couple years I am having to accept that my workouts need to change as I age. In particular some workouts move too quickly for me now. Some are workouts that I loved when I was younger but now I fear they are accidents waiting to happen. I don't mind if there are few places where this occurs but if the entire workout seems frantic I have decided my prize dvds have to go. Some are my beloved Michelle Dozois workouts. I keep having thoughts about how I loved these 10 years ago and I might want them back. Then I remind myself that I am not getting younger and if they are frantic today that will be worse in the future. And I have some that I keep wanting to love because VFers rave about them so I keep trying them hoping I will learn to like them. Most of these also move at frantic pace. Tonique workouts fall into this category, Also I used to love power yoga. Now I like more restorative and slower yoga. So I am adding yoga dvds to the "Gotta Go" box. It is hard to admit I am getting older and have to respect the changes to my body!

It is hard to admit I am getting older and have to respect the changes to my body! Older and wiser as the saying goes β€οΈ Itβs bittersweet, but itβs good sometimes to move on and let go. Iβve also had to re-evaluate my workouts. As Iβve aged, it takes longer to recover from injuries. It seems like injuries happen more easily too. Iβve learned the importance of mobility training. It helps me to perform other exercises better. When I was younger it was all about strength. I rarely did yoga and the only stretching I did was in the Firm workouts. Iβm enjoying slowing down and focusing on strength, stretching and flexibility. I do a greater variety of workouts like Pilates, barre & yin yoga now. I have a much greater range of motion and flexibility now that Iβm older than I had in my youth. I think thereβs a lot to like about slowing down and enjoying different types of workouts.

I too have had to change my workouts as I am getting older. Like Karla, I am now spending more time on mobility than ever before but it has made a world of difference in helping my joints and minor aches/pains and making me better at strength moves. I used to be an avid Cathe fan and all of my workouts were with her. She still has some strength workouts that are slower pace but a lot of her strength and especially circuit workouts just move too fast for me even with the lightest weights. I have now moved to paper workouts for strength because I enjoy going at my own pace. And I am finding love in certain yoga practices like yin, restorative, and some hatha. Sometimes I miss my Cathe step workouts but I know that I need to do what my body can handle long term.

Same. It feels like Iβm always starting over again due to illness or injury. Iβm going slowly this time, but still have faith that I can modify my quicker moving workouts to meet my pace rather than the other way. I plan to get back I to step workouts, but do them on the floor sans step. My power yoga dvds, I simply will not do or will slow down vinyasa. I recently acquired some yoga books and yoga cards so I can explore at my own pace. I love regular barre, but find the cardio barre workouts are also frantic. I DO think I can still participate, but just at a slower pace. Thatβs why I havenβt gotten rid of any workouts yet.

This discussion is so empowering. The realisation has come that if I canβt modify where I am at with my fitness level now (as good as it gets) and be reasonably comfortable then the workout has to go. I am already modifying tall box height/step height and playing with poundage of weights as well.

When I was planning my November rotation, I thought about slipping in Cathe's LITE SBSS UB/LB workouts as I haven't done them in about a year. But I up the weights to what i usually use and at her pace, it's frenetic, for me now. I debated, do I lower the weight to be more controlled at that pace, or do something different - Im doing something different. As I get older, the less I like frenetic workouts. When I was younger, I loved them - not so anymore though.
